Helping you to live a life of freedom, abundance and fulfilment
What is life coaching?
Coaching is one of the fastest growing professions. Having emerged from the area of sports in the 1960s, coaching transferred to business in the 1970s and 1980s, underwent a high degree of diversification and popularisation in the 1990s, and is today regarded as a respected and widely used resource for personal development.
There are many definitions of coaching, but there is a general common understanding of what it encompasses:
"Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them." Whitmore
"Coaching is a collaborative, solution-focused, results-orientated and systematic process in which the coach facilitates the enhancement of work performance, life experience, self-directed learning and personal growth of the coachee." Grant
"Coaching is a professional partnership between a qualified coach and an individual or team that supports the achievement of extraordinary results, based on goals set by the individual or team." ICF
At the heart of coaching is self-directed learning, personal growth and improved performance. Positive Horizons Life Coaching provides you with a systematic and structured approach to realising your full potential and getting the very best out of yourself. It involves a process of identifying and then eliminating destructive behavioural and thinking patterns in your life. Through a step-by-step approach, it enables you to become more empowered and confident in working towards achieving your goals.
How is it done?
The sessions can be done either face-to-face, on the telephone, online, or via Skype. I am totally committed to supporting you in a relaxing, empathetic and confidential environment. As the name Positive Horizons suggests, the coaching process should be a very positive one with positive outcomes.
Positive Horizons Life Coaching involves identifying life goals, establishing milestones, and setting weekly action steps. Although you, the client, have to take full responsibility for taking the action, I can promise that I will be there for you to guide you along the pathways to your dreams. In between sessions, I am available on the phone or by e-mail to give you appropriate back-up support. I am always keen to pass on ideas, tips, and useful articles and books that I come across.
I can also work with small groups or pairs, so please ask me about that if you are interested. Executive and Corporate Coaching is covered in greater depth on a separate page on this website.
How does it compare with counselling, psychotherapy and mentoring?
Life coaching is very different. It draws its influences from and stands on the shoulders of a wide range of disciplines, including counselling, management consultancy, personal development and psychology. Rather than dwelling on the past, it focuses on the present and the future. It doesn’t pretend to have all the solutions, but it provides you with the tools and strategies to make changes and improvements. With life coaching, the past is only relevant by helping us find out what has prevented you from moving forwards. It will help identify the obstacles and barriers you have been experiencing and find ways to overcome them.
The Association for Coaching uses the metaphor of driving a car to distinguish coaching from its related fields.
- A therapist will explore what is stopping you driving the car.
- A counsellor will listen to your anxieties about the car.
- A mentor will share tips from his or her own experience of driving cars.
- A consultant will advise you on how to drive the car.
- A coach will encourage and support you in driving the car.
Is it expensive?
Over the years, I have probably spent thousands of pounds on self-improvement, but I have never questioned it. For me, it was vital. In our materialistic society, people rarely question spending on new cars, new clothes, or investing in property. However, how much do we invest in ourselves and our own well-being? Life coaching can be life-changing, so what price can you put on that? What price can you put on living a life of freedom for the rest of your life?
